About Breast Reconstruction

Experience is the reason Dr. Cambeiro feels that breast reconstruction, although never a simple procedure, is among the most rewarding surgeries that he does. Advances in surgical techniques and tools now translate into an opportunity for previous mastectomy patients to achieve, through reconstructive surgery, a very natural-looking result.

Some patients are candidates for a combined mastectomy and breast reconstruction. This option should be thoroughly explored by everyone on your medical team before determining your candidacy for such a procedure.

Typically, breast reconstruction happens as a sequence of procedures. Here are some of the steps involved in a traditional breast reconstruction performed by Dr. Cambeiro:

  • Step One: Your consultation. After an initial exam, the surgeon will discuss your reconstruction options. Ideally, your oncologist or the surgeon who performed your mastectomy are consulted so that your breast reconstruction strategy is best-suited to your particular medical and physical needs.
  • Step Two. Creating shape and space. Under general anesthesia, this is accomplished by placing a balloon expander under your skin and muscle. Then, your plastic surgeon will schedule appointments in which he gradually adds a salt-water solution to the expander over time. Some women can skip this step and go straight to receiving breast implants. Dr. Cambeiro may also opt for a surgical alternative, called flap surgery or the flap technique, which involves creating a "skin flap" for your new breast using your own skin.
  • Step Three. Receiving breast implants. Once your skin and muscle have grown to support a new breast, a second surgery may be required to remove the expander. However there are expanders than require no subsequent surgery.
  • Step Four. Other surgical variables. Should you require nipple or areola reconstructive surgery, that will happen in a separate procedure.

Regardless of the specifics of your particular breast reconstruction, you should anticipate a more demanding recovery and different scarring than traditional breast augmentation patients.

Some common breast reconstruction recovery details include:

  • Feeling sore at the surgical site, and tired overall, for about two weeks.
  • An anticipated hospital stay of two to five days.
  • The need for a surgical drain.
  • The need for a caregiver for about a day after you return home after surgery.
  • The need to refrain from work for about a week, and from strenuous movement for about a month.

Whether or not you can combine breast reconstruction with other body contouring surgeries is a question Dr. Cambeiro can address after your initial consultation.
