Top 10 Questions You Should Know about Your Plastic Surgeon

Breast FAQ

Can I have the same breast augmentation as my friend?

All breasts are shaped and sized differently from one person to another. During your consultation,  will develop a customized breast augmentation plan for your unique breasts. I do not perform “cookie cutter” operations because all breasts should be treated differently. All breast implant placements, breast incision patterns, breast implant types and sizes are determined specifically for you to obtain optimum results.

What are the advantages of above the muscle breast augmentation?

Breast implants placed above the muscle tend to have a shorter post-operative recovery and the final results are typically seen sooner than breast implants placed below the muscle. A breast lift may be avoided by placing the breast implant above the muscle in women who have a small amount of sagging of the breast.

What are the disadvantages of above the muscle breast augmentation?

Breast implants placed above the muscle tend to have a higher likelihood of rippling and capsular contracture. They also may tend to descend sooner over time than breast implants placed above the muscle.

What are the advantages of below the muscle breast augmentation?

Breast implants placed below the muscle tend to have less of chance of capsular contracture and rippling. The muscle may help hide the implant by acting as a buffer between the breast implant and the skin. In addition, a radiologist typically can see more of your breast tissue during mammograms when the breast implant is placed in this location.

What are the disadvantages of below the muscle breast augmentation?

Breast implants placed below the muscle will have slightly more discomfort and a longer period of recovery than implants placed above the muscle. Initially, the breast implants will tend to “ride” high on the chest until the muscle relaxes and the swelling decreases. Once this happens the breast implants will “drop” into proper position. The final result will take at least six weeks and some rare cases up to six months. Keep in mind that your breasts should look appropriate in clothing during this healing period.

What incisions are used?

I recommend one of three incision patterns: inframammary (in the breast crease), periareolar (along the inferior portion of the areola), and axillary (armpit). During the consultation, I will discuss with you which incision will give you the best results. I do not recommend the transumbilical approach as the surgical dissection and the implant placement are done blindly and bluntly. This can create unsatisfied results.

What is the advantage of endoscopic breast augmentation?

Breast scars are avoided by placing the incision in your natural armpit crease. Endoscopic breast augmentation allows you have natural appearance to your breasts. Recovery and healing time tends to be quicker given the surgical dissection is done under direct visualization.

Why is endoscopic axillary breast augmentation better than non-endoscopic axillary breast augmentation?

With the endoscopic and the non-endoscopic axillary breast augmentation the incision is made in the natural crease of the armpit. However, with the endoscopic technique all the surgical dissection is performed with an endoscope. An endoscope is a pencil sized camera that displays the images on a large television screen in the operating room. This is similar to how orthopedic surgeons, gynecologists, and general surgeons perform their minimally invasive operations such as knee surgery, gall bladder surgery and hysterectomy. The endoscope allows the plastic surgeon to precisely create the breast pocket for the breast implant. This causes significantly less tissue trauma and more accurate placement of the implant than the non-endoscopic axillary breast augmentation. Dr. Cambeiro feels that the axillary breast augmentation SHOULD NOT be performed without the use of an endoscopic camera.

What are the different types of breast implants?

Currently there are two types of breast implants FDA approved for breast augmentation. The first is the standard saline breast implants and the second is silicone breast implant.

What are the benefits of saline over silicone breast implants?

Saline breast implants require a smaller incision for placement and they are less expensive than the silicone breast implants. If the saline implant ruptures your breast will appear deflated and your body will absorb the saline.

What are the benefits of silicone over saline breast implants?

Silicone breast implants tend to feel and look more natural with less chances of rippling.

Are there any requirements or suggestions for silicone breast implants from the FDA?

Yes, the FDA requires that the patient be at least 22 years of age. They recommend that the patient obtain a specific breast MRI scan three years after the surgery and every two years there after. In addition, the FDA requires you toread and understand a small booklet 1- 2 weeks before the operation.

Is there a warranty on the breast implants?

Yes. The manufacturer that Dr. Cambeiro uses will give you two new implants for life should they ever rupture. If your implants rupture within ten years they will give you two new implants and a small monetary stipend to help defray the additional medical costs for replacement. Please refer to the manufacture for exact details as the warranty and details may change from time to time.

Is there anything else besides pain medication that can be used for post-operative pain control?

The majority of patients do not need anything other than pain medications for the first few days after surgery. However, if you have a very low pain tolerance and are anxious about the pain control a pain pump can be used for the first 3-5 days after the surgery. A pain pump continually infuses local anesthesia into the breast wound and helps numb the area during your recovery period.

Tummy Tuck FAQ

What are the advantages of a tummy tuck when compared to liposuction?

A tummy tuck is advantageous if you have a significant amount of excess skin, poor skin laxity, excessive lower abdominal stretch marks, and weak or stretched abdominal muscles (from weight loss or pregnancy). Liposuction is the alternative if you have strong abdominal muscles, good skin tone, and localized fat deposits on the abdomen.

What are the disadvantages of a tummy tuck?

Tummy tucks are often associated with a scar from hip bone to hip bone. In this procedure, the belly button is repositioned causing a small scar surrounding it. Although the lower abdominal/pubic scar is usually covered when a bathing suit is worn, the scars are visible without clothes. The scars will fade with time.

Are tummy tucks painful?

Abdominoplasties are very well tolerated by patients. The majority of patients do not need anything other than pain medications for the first few days after surgery. However, if you have a very low pain tolerance and are anxious about the pain control a pain pump can be used for the first 3-5 days after the surgery. Your plastic surgeon should have admitting and plastic surgical privileges at a hospital. This is important in case an unforeseen complication should develop in his office or the surgery center. For example, if your plastic surgeon performs a breast augmentation or liposuction on you at a local surgery center he or she needs to have those same privileges at the hospital. You can call your local hospital to check your doctors’ privileges. Do they have a backup board certified plastic surgeon covering their patients when they are out of town or unavailable.
